A Good Friend

Do you feel that George did the right thing? How can you relate or at least justify yourself:

  1. I do think George did the right thing. When Lennie's aunt died, George could've let him take care of himslelf or he could've leave him stranded somewhere to die, but instead he became a bigger person and started taking care of Lennie. Even though George knows it's a big responsibility and hard work, he still agreed to take care of him. George doesn't let noone mess with Lennie because of his mental issue and because he cares about him. George may be the way he is, all mean and likes to berate Lennie because of his actions, but i think he is that way because he doesn't have noone to take care of him. George and Lennie have each other, but george doesn't see that.

Lennie is lucky to have George by his side because without him he wouldn't be able to survive. George has money saved for a ranch for the both of them and is working to have what they both dream about.

Even though George is an aggresive person, he still a pretty good friend.

  2. Excellent response BHernandez.. (love the use of your voc. word too!) But your response to this question will change, most likely, when you reach the end of the book. I encourage you to go on..

  3. Without a doubt I feel George did the right thing. It's a win-win situation where both of them need each other. They both have nothing alike. But they share the same dream. George looks like he's the smarter of the 2. But he really needs Lennie, so he can keep his confidence & make him feel better. Lennie needs someone to give him discipline, & help him move on. George made the right decision because he knows Lennie is a hard worker, & George is smart. This will help their dream of getting a ranch

  4. Unfortunately, both of you are answering the question beautifully, but you can't do so properly until you have finished the book. You don' t need to blog until you finish, and then, this question will make A LOT MORE SENSE you you both. (you will get credit so far, but when you finish the book, come back to post again.)

  6. Now that i have read the rest of the book, I still feel that george did the right thing, but at the same time I feel he didn't.

I feel that George did the right thing because after the incident with the little puppy and Curley's wife, he still said that noone is going to do anythin to him. George is still sticking ou for Lennie even though he knows he shouldn't. He tells Curley ' "The poor bastard's nuts. Don't shoot 'im. He di'n't knownwhat he was doin'.' " This just shows that he cares for Lennie.

I also feel that he didn't do the right thing because he regressed and relinquished on Lennie. He couldnt take nomore of Lennie's actions, so he did what he thought would be right thing to do. He didn't think it would come to it. Lennie didn't know it was coming to him. He was just having europhic and infallibale moment talking about the ranch that they would've both had dome day. But George just kept shaking and shaking until he pulled the trigger.

  7. Since I have first fished the book, I realized that George did do the right thing. Lennie did not mean trouble or harm. It just happened to him. Lennie was going to die either way. Whether Curley shot him, or whether George did it. George did it so that Lennie wouldn't expect it. Lennie didn't go through any physical pain, he didn't bleed to death or anything. It was done and over with. As horrible as this sounds, it was better that way.

  8. In a way I do feel did the right thing killing him before someone else would have. But in the same respect he should have stood up for him more if he did truly care about him. It was good in away for killing him so that he couldn’t hurt anyone else. I do feel conflicted because he did the right thing and the wrong thing. The rights I feel in his actions were that he stops him from hurting anyone else or any more animals. I feel this way because you can’t just know that someone is going around killing people and hurting things and not stop him. In the same respect George shouldn’t have killed him you should have gotten him help. George said,” He doesn’t mean to hurt people.” IF he doesn’t mean to hurt people and doesn’t know what he is doing, why not just turn him over to the police. I feel both these ways because they stop someone from hurting people but they did it in a wrongful way. But they also got justice for him killing Mr. Curley’s Wife

  12. I do believe that Gorge did the right thing, because if the men would have caught Lennie they would have tortured him and Probably would caused him much pain. Also if he would have been arrested the police would have locked him up and eventually killed him. Now that Lennie is dead Gorge can live a normal life and not have to get Lennie out of trouble all the time he can move on and stay at work and not worry about being fired because of Lennie or having to be on the run because of Lennie so I do think Gorge did the right thing.

  13. very true. I do ave to agree, if the other men would have caught him it would have been a much worse punishment.killing him before the men was the best thing so he wouldn't have to suffer to much of a tragic death. He was shot the same way candy's dog was shot, in the back of the head.

  14. George did the right thing, not only was it the right thing it was the only thing he could have done. Lennie was always a problem for george, he was always getting in trouble and george always forgave him for every little thing. George could have said he wasn't going to take care of Lennie when Lennie's Aunt Claira died or he could have easily left Lennie somewhere. George was always good to Lennie but when Lennie killed Curley's wife George knew that Lennie was going to get beaten and killed by Curley and the other men from the ranch but george did himself because Lennie was his responsibility.

  15. so what your saying is the problem was solved just by shooting hi, There could have been other ways of the solving the problem but the way that George handle it was perfect because no one else could kill him. He killed him out of love by killing him before anyone else could do it in a painful tragic way.

  16. I believe that George did do the right thing and that what he did was out of kindness. Lennie was most definitely spared the shock of hatred and cruelty in which he was bound to receive from the others that were after him. Also, the shot in the back of the head was very quick and much less painful than Curley's way of making him suffer for the death of his wife.

  17. he followed the words of what old man Candy said," I should have shot my own dog and shouldn't hav let some stranger do it.

  18. a. I feel George did the right thing because he knew it couldn’t be any other way. George was unaware of what the consequences would have been for what Lennie has done. So he took matters into his own hands and probably felt what better person to take his life then the person who helped take care of him. I feel George would have wanted it to be him and no one else. George probably thought about what Candy had said about him letting a stranger shoot his dog and it should have been him. George didn’t know what the men would do to Lennie if they got to him first. George did what he felt was right even though he was out under a lot of pressure. He knew Lennie was in a better place and wouldn’t have to deal with the struggle of getting into more trouble than usual.

  19. I do believe George did the right thing, because if he would have never shot Lennie, then it would have caused more harm towards him and others. As bad as it sounds, Lennie is better off, because now he does not have to worry about causing harm and getting yelled at all the time. Now I understand what it means when the book and the movie say " I'd rather shoot my own dog, then letting a stranger" .

  20. I believe George did the right thing by shooting Lennie. George would have been a bad friend if he wasn't the one to do it. Lennie would have suffered if George let Curley deal with him. Lennie had a lot of problems that the people around him didn't understand. I'm sure it was very hard for George to see people treat Lennie differently than they would anyone else. George shooting Lennie showed that he did care about him and wouldn't want him to be tortured by someone else for doing something bad. George understood Lennie and knew that he probably didn't mean to kill Curley's wife. The quote "I'd rather shoot my own dog then letting a stranger." makes much more sense to me now.

  21. George did the right thing because he had the choice of living in fear or to let his friend die in peace & let George live the life he always wanted.

  22. George absolutely did the right thing when he chose to shoot Lennie. Throughout the entire novel, George takes responsibility of Lennie, so in the end, he wanted to be responsible for ending Lennie's life. The way that he killed Lennie was as humane and peaceful as possible, and Lennie's last thoughts were happy. Lennie would've been met with a terrible death had he been found by Curley. Earlier in the story, Candy makes the mistake of letting someone else shoot his dog, which was Candy's responsibility, and Candy did not get the closure that he wanted before the dog was killed. George killed Lennie in a way that gave him peace of mind, and it was the right thing to do, for his sake, and for Lennie's.

  23. I think that George did do the right thing. If he wouldn't have killed Lennie himself the other guys could have done a lot worse, they could have sent him to jail or tortured him and Lennie would live a terrible life. George also took Candy's advice about shooting his own dog and not letting some one else shoot his dog, aka Lennie. If George would have let the other guys kill Lennie it would have been a sad death, but George was being very nice to Lennie when he killed him. He was telling him stories about the farm and the rabbits so Lennie would die a happy man.

  24. I think George was man enough and stepped up to the plate in taking care of Lennie. Through out the story, George had Lennie's back. I also respect George for what he did in the end. It could of been way worse! They would've tortured Lennie to the point where he would of died a bad death. George did what he had to do, and while Lennie was alive he made sure he always was there for Lennie.

I agree with you about the Candy situation! He should of killed his dog himself.

  26. I believe George did do the right thing. If George would of not have killed Lennie, then he would of been tortured. I believe one reason he shot Lennie was because of the advice Candy has given him earlier in the book. When Carlson shot Candy's dog, Candy was depressed and wished that he would of killed it himself. George didn't want to make that same miskate that Candy did. The big question at the end is that, can George still afford the ranch. My opinion would be no, just cause I'd think that George would want to spend his life at the ranch. Candy wasn't exactly the youngest person so he's be living a lone in a few years. Just like we have seen in crooks, Lonlieless can drive a man crazy.Lennie symbolizes hope, and without Lennie, George would have no friends, except the people on the ranch. So yes, I do believe that George did the right thing.

  27. I agree with a lot of people when they say George did the right thing, I feel the same way. It almost made me mad that all the other characters, especially Curley is what killed Lennie. Due to Curley's "tough guy" behavior.

I agree with you. Lennie had enough fear in his life. He was living as a refugee for something that he really had no control over

Your paragraph clarified how much Geroge really did care about Lennie. Lennie kept suggesting through out the book that he can find a cave or run away. Your right when you say that he could of left him when his aunt Clara died. Lennies like a pet, because George always forgave and he had to take extremly good care of him.

  30. I feel like George did the right thing. But at the same time, I felt like George didn't HAVE to kill him. i just wouldn't do something like that. I could never kill someone because he was doing things wrong, when I know he did not mean to do any of it. Could I relate to this situation? Nope. Not at all. Doing something like that, will tear me apart. Especially, since everyone knew George loved Lennie to death, and literally, To Death. . .
