Social Darwinism

Critics claim that the theme of Social Darwinism or the concept of the “survival of the Fittest” exists throughout this novella. Where do you find evidence of the theme or message of "Social Darwinism" within this novel?

  1. In this novel, there is some evidence of Social Darwinism. In my opinion Social Darwinism is shown when George and Lennie are traveling around the country. This shows it because they are still surviving without having to live in luxury.
    *SPOOILER ALERT*

Also, at the end when Lennie dies because of George, this shows that Lennie couldn’t have survived in a world that he hardly understood. Even though, he survived up until now because of his strength and determination. He couldn’t have carried on much longer with him being so slow. Especially if he lost George somehow.

  2. How about the idea that "only the strong will survive" and those who are weak and unable to adjust to the harsh society, will perish??

  3. More specifically, is there a specific scene in which Steinbeck illustrates this? (Slim's actions)

  4. "Only the strong will survive" is strongly illustrated throughout this novel. Those who are weak will perish. For example, Candy's dog was shot because he was old and he wasn't of any good use anymore. Even Candy stated he wishes someone would have shoot him when he isn't of any use anymore, because he knows only the strong will survive. Candy knew he was getting older and older and wouldn't survive much longer on the ranch.

  5. Nice work Duell and Smith. Just wished you two had battled this topic out further.
